Amenda Tate Biography
Amenda Tate was born in Des Moines, Iowa. Studies in mechanical engineering led her to the realization that her interest in “how things work” would be better satisfied by artistic endeavors. She creates objects, processes, performative happenings, collaborative and exploratory works of art. Amenda studied metalsmithing under professor Chuck Evans before moving to Colorado in 1998. Amenda worked as a jeweler’s apprentice to Todd Reed in Boulder, Colorado while completing her undergraduate studies at Metropolitan State University of Denver. She holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree with an emphasis in Jewelry Design and Metalsmithing. After 14 years in Colorado, Amenda returned to Iowa and spends time
creating in her artist studio located in the Fitch Building, downtown Des Moines. Her works utilize scientific processes to achieve aesthetic results addressing topics such as identity, individuality, longevity, and social culture in our digital era. Her works have been featured in solo and group exhibitions across the US. Amenda has worked as an Artist-In Residence with Area 515 Makerspace in Des Moines and with Ballet Des Moines in Iowa. Her works have been featured by various media outlets including the Denver Post, the book Art Jewelry Today 2, Des Moines Register, Better Homes & Gardens, and dsm Magazine. Special honors include a permanent collection commission by Arrow Electronics in conjunction with Cherry Arts and the Colorado Ballet as well as a special recognition award in the 2017 International RobotArt competition.
