Andrew K. Currey Biography
For the past several years, I have used images from art history to begin a discussion in my drawings about the constantly evolving Internet culture and its affects on society. I use anachronistic metaphors to discuss similarities between the contemporary and the historical, in order to highlight these ironic and tongue-in- cheek redundancies. The use of gold in this work is meant to humorously highlight the frivolity in which we choose to glorify aspects of technology. The apple has been a constant symbol for knowledge, from the Garden of Eden, to Isaac Newton and Apple Computers -- a symbol of knowledge that has been consumed and overindulged until there is nothing but a husk. The work directly references classical sources of art theory like Walter Benjamin (with a pencil rendering of a photograph of Byron Company Photographers on the Roof of Colonel Marceaus Studio, New York, c. 1920) for the piece "Self Reflection in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction." Here I reference Benjamin’s discussion on the ability to easily duplicate work, and how that commodification can devalue them. I draw a comparison that if we have become a culture that has given birth to the selfie, and glorified the self, does our understanding of the self, change? Or at least, become less significant? The act of laboriously rendering an image to resemble a photograph is as moronic of a notion as constantly photographing ourselves to show that we know who we are. Andrew K. Currey received his Bachelors in Fine Arts at the University of North Texas in Denton, Texas, and later received his Masters in Fine Arts from Otis College of Art and Design. He was the 2014 Artist-In- Residence of Shankill Castle in Paulstown, Ireland. Andrew currently lives and works in Los Angeles, CA.
