Janna Kumi Biography
Born in the Netherlands, Janna Kumi immigrated to Canada with her parents in 1953. She began her art studies in Montreal during the heyday of artistic discovery in 1968, but lasted only one year. Instead, she went on to graduate with degrees at the Bachelor and Masters level in geography and forestry and went on to a successful and rewarding career in forestry and natural resource management. After a major stroke in 2005, Kumi had to review her priorities and decided it was time to pick up and complete what she left so long ago. She enrolled in fine art studies at Emily Carr University, completed a Bachelor of Fine Art from the University of British Columbia and is presently pursuing post graduate studies in art history. She still finds trees fascinating. This time she’s not centered on their management, but on the artistic explorations of the amazing colours and shapes of the bark and wood, how trees communicate with the ecosystems they inhabit, and continue to be so useful to us as the air we breathe. Using innovative approaches of with acrylic ink stains on raw canvas, surreal interpretive colour pencil drawings on paper, or hand colouring mulberry paper for collages, Kumi pursues her art practice with passion and commitment that comes from a lifetime of experience.
