Lori Horowitz Biography:
I am a multi-faceted artist, with emphasis in sculpture and set design. I received a BFA in Visual Arts from S.U.N.Y. Purchase. I have been involved with teaching, designing and creating art to promote the spread of culture and creative expression. I have educated students, created sculpture and multi- media artwork as well as theatrical sets for TV /theater and film. Throughout my career, I continued to produce sculptures and paintings, accumulating a large body of artwork while showing my work in galleries and museums. Creating art based on society, political issues and the environment is my true passion. My work is a study of personalities and environments that compliment imitate and incorporate elements of everyday life. My current series of papier mache sculptures depict individuals in society and their interactions in everyday life. These sculptures are based on photographs taken of candid subjects. My images digest the posture of society while faces reflect their stories. Each scene captures a moment in time. Often going unseen and unheard, we all contribute and make up this diverse population. These strangers are subjects in my artwork. I appreciate the challenge of each piece, collapsing three dimensional pieces into 2 and 3 dimensional space. I love the process working with photography, wire, papier mache`, copper and painting I have worked with wire and paper for many years and have developed a technique that produces light weight, sculpture with volume, and detail. I seem to become somehow bonded to these individuals carefully exploring and interpreting their attitudes and challenges. I will give a demonstration of my technique used to create these pieces. I welcome the public to come and view my process and speak about the inspiration for this series. In 2013, I started a community initiative on Long Island opening a not-for-profit artspace, “Studio 5404” bringing cultural arts to the south shore of Long Island. The mission was to show quality cutting edge artwork in all media created by under-represented and emerging artists. After a successful 3.5 year run, I closed the gallery in June 2016. I continue to curate for a number of galleries, while creating my own artwork and sharing it with the public.
