Triada Samaras Biography
I am an interdisciplinary artist of Greek ancestry whose artwork investigates: human identity, body, voice, house/home, geography and language. My artwork is often auto-biographical. Through familiar representations I explore my feelings, thoughts, memories, perceptions and experiences. However, these recognizable images are almost always metaphors.
I believe being human is often traumatic. By this I mean shocking, startling, unpredictable and even devastating. I know for myself this has always been true. I have experienced the absolute nightmare that is depersonalization disorder. Earlier in life, I had neither the words for my experience nor the ability to explain it to anyone else. I thought my life had broken irreparably deep inside myself where no one on the outside could ever see or comprehend. I was bound inside myself and
to myself. But with help I gradually learned to use creative metaphors to dare myself to become unbound. I learned to both explore my past and to let go of it. And I learned to release the powerful emotional forces within me to a greater realm, one that is imaginary and mysterious and even more powerful. For me the art studio is a place of magic and transformation where ‘what has been’ can become ‘what might have been’ or ‘what might still be’ or many other possibilities. Using artmaking I enjoy being catapulted beyond what I know and transformed. I enjoy becoming unbound. Triada Samaras 2017.
