Young Shin Biography
Creating art for me is the process of excavation and revelation of beauty and complexity of what lies deep beneath, past what is conspicuously obvious. As people, we change and evolve, but also leave traces and remnants of who we are, albeit buried, as we continue to shed our old skin in exchange for new ones. Thus, once one layer removed, I find that circumstances and people reveal much more unique, ambivalent and nebulous texture and inclination. In such irony, initiated by the difference between what is physically revealed and what is hidden underneath, unbeknownst to us, there exists paradoxical complexities, knowing anything or anyone with unequivocal certainty impossible – ambiguous, at best. Naturally, with each piece I create, I strive to capture nuance and beauty of inner space below the exterior, beyond the empirically apparent. The process of building and achieving refinement by destroying what has been copiously and intentionally built is my means of expression. I begin by creating images and place paper cutouts onto a canvas, and continue to brace the image by applying several layers of paper. Once dried, I chafe and erode the surface by removing, scratching, stripping, peeling, and sanding – intimating archaic or even archeological ambiance to a piece, as it reveals certain embedded intrinsic intricacies and marks underneath the top layers. These “stamped” markings and textures are
meant to reveal human uniqueness, complexities and idiosyncrasies that are beyond our cerebral comprehension, hidden deeply away from purviews of others and, at times, even from our own selves.
