The Twin Project Biography:
The Twin Project are a creative, collaborative duo consisting of identical twin sisters, Stella and Gem. They were born in Shoreham by Sea, just outside of Brighton, England in 1990. The Twin Project work together to create artwork that challenges twin stereotypes, explores twin fantasies and conveys the hardships of discovering their individual identities. They predominantly work with continuous line, collage and photography. The twins insert themselves in almost all of their works, by photographing each other and collaging their faces and body parts. They create their work in sync with one another, by starting in the middle and working out, drawing continuously to create illustrations that represent the mixture of emotions of what it is like to be an identical twin. Stella and Gem grew up in their family home, along with their parents and younger brother. The twins personal journey as artists were quite different from one another. Although they are both creative individuals, their styles and interests are very contrasting, which makes their combined artwork even more fascinating. Stella studied Art at Northbrook University in 2010, where she received a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Illustration. Gem attended Northbrook College that same year, and studied Fashion and Textiles, achieving straight distinctions. After studying very different creative subjects, the twins eventually decided to combine their skill sets, to create unique and abstract works of art. The identical twins work developed into such an unusual style that they decided to work together as artists, and thus The Twin Project was born. Their artwork is about creating discussions and controversy and is very much about themselves as much as it is about their artwork. They use themselves to exploit society’s views on identical twins, by dressing exactly the same. Their intention is to play on the myth of twins being clones of each other by appearing the same, and then smacking the viewer in the face with their artwork, showing how different they really are. The Twin Project have an upcoming solo exhibition on 25th August 2017 to showcase their current series of artwork called ‘Society Has Messed Us Up’.
