Liliana Zavaleta Biography
Migration, the search for a territory or ‘place’ that is ours and the nature that surrounds that place, are subjects that interest me and affect me personally. These are the issues that influence me in my work. The world is in continuous movement, moving and migrating, by choice or necessity. It is this continuous movement that makes us reflect on our relationship with our environment. It inspires us to ask ourselves how and if we belong. This question of belonging reflects my own reality, as I have always been an immigrant. But I’ve never viewed the world through a single prism. My realities were always multiple – and it was easy to leave one reality to enter another. And the world was always a space that was there to explore. That challenge of how to look at our habitat, how to face a new environment is what stimulated me in my work. I aspire to visually gather the idea of language, emotion and space, the search for place - always allowing the feeling of uncertainty to remain. I try to balance the deliberate with the spontaneous and irregular, where they become a new experience, a new reality that then express a new history. A new story. I began my search as an artist as a photographer, but have now also been painting for many years.
Dedicated to true expression through the arts.
