Saskia Huitema Biography
Saskia Huitema, a self taught artist, works from her home in Utrecht, central in the Netherlands where she lives with her husband, daughter and cat. Currently Saskia’s favorite subject is her daughter who models for her and undergoes multiple transformations according to the theme of the piece. Saskia’s attraction to the low brow art movement and popculture shows in her art. Her realistic pieces- often with a touch of fantasy- evoke a mood of mystery and enchantment. Her distinctive realistic portraits call for attention as the gaze is automatically drawn towards the portrayed and lingers there as colorful details of dress and fabrics are taken in. Fashion photography , the twenties, the Pre Raphaelites and nature are sources of inspiration. Her piece “De Vliegenier” which translates as “The Aviator” was inspired by Rembrandt van Rijn. The typical use of light and dark and the dark color palet is incorporated in this work. In The Netherlands his 350th anniversary of death is remembered in 2019 through many special events and exhibitions. Saskia exhibits in galleries internationally, Art Fairs and at museums. She has won first prizes and her works have been nominated by jury in the national Dutch competition “Painting of the Year” in 2015 and 2016 and by the jury of ZomerExpo in 2017.
